Deep Ones (Profundos) names two unreconciled things in Antiterra: creatures that climb from the sea up ships’ hulls, and a dragon-slaying adventuring company called the Deep Ones. They are recorded separately.

The creatures

They come “from the depths of the Atlantic” and attack by boarding, climbing from the water to the deck; their namer called them “cursed Deep Ones”. The Deep One seeks to “burst your ribs and bend them backward, and put worms in you”, using the body as a vessel. Their skin, size, color and voice are not recorded.

The company

No description of the company survives. Its fame as dragon-slayers precedes it (“Ustedes deben ser los profundos. Somos los profundos, sí.” — “You must be the Deep Ones.” “We are the Deep Ones, yes.”). The name is also a rallying cry: “Deep Ones!”, shouts Henry’s voice from above. The members came together with a common goal after speaking with the queen of the Atlantic; the goal is not recorded.

The water

Deep water links both: the Atlantic yields the creatures, its queen the company’s goal. In the same region “some of these lakes are deep”, and their songs and gestures drove some listeners mad; whether these belong to the Deep Ones is not established.

Conflicting accounts

  • One testimony says the Deep Ones were “more like 13” and that the name preceded that of the Regulators, but doubts as it says it (“they took the name of Regulators, or was it from before”); the identity stays open.
  • What the figure thirteen counts is not established.

Open questions

  • Whether creatures and company are homonyms, whether the company took its enemy’s name, or whether they are one thing split in two is unknown.
  • What the worms are, what becomes of the body, and whether they can be removed is unknown.
  • How many creatures board, whether they speak or sing, and whether the lakes connect to the Atlantic are unknown.
