Mr. Wolf is an impeccably dressed gentleman, missing one ear, whose body holds a silver heart that everyone pursues. He detects lies, fights as a wolf, and is said to be “the same one from… 500 years ago”, walking with the company in the present.

TypeCharacter
Spanish entryMr. Wolf

Description

“Impeccable suit”, a gentleman’s bearing, Spanish or Italian in manner. When he grabs his head, one sees he is missing an ear.

The silver heart

The heart keeps him going and makes him worth seizing: “they caught him with Mr. Wolf, the gem and the heart”. In the present, “they have taken the heart out of Mr. Wolf”; he is “contaminated, poisoned”, “writhing” as he speaks. A note protects him: “don’t kill him, he was good”. Under torture he says: “don’t give in to them”.

Abilities

  • “He can detect lies.”
  • In a fight he leaps on his prey and “tries to catch it by the legs”.
  • The heart is currency, traded one for one with a gem: «Yo les voy a entregar el corazón una vez que me den la gema» (“I will hand you the heart once you give me the gem”).

History

  • Madrid, 1887: the “galistas” were going to shoot him; he survived. From then dates “a Mr. Wolf of the 1880s”, with sideburns.
  • Iron Mountain: he announced it as his destination, “because there was a portal here”, telling Judy; a pact between Wolf and Judy is recorded.
  • The tower: “they took Mr. Wolf, and some of his companions stayed”. Yet in the long stretch he is “with you, also affected”.

Seen from 1987, 1887 counts as “100 years ago”.

Relationships

  • “The woman” embraces him; who she is is not recorded.
  • An unconfirmed external attribution calls him “the lead one who defends Miguelito”, though his heart is silver.
  • An identification with one Petro Wulf is suggested, never resolved.

Conflicting accounts

  • Age: 500 years, versus the 1880s and Madrid 1887: one being in two eras, two appearances, or a confusion.
  • The heart: caught with him, or already taken out; whether it is in his chest, with captors or pending delivery is not fixed.

Open questions

  • “Spanish or Italian, but lived a long time with him”: “him” is unidentified.
  • Who took his ear, and the poison’s source and cure, are unknown.
  • Who the “galistas” were (the name is garbled) and why they “sent a girl ahead” is unknown.
  • His tower companions are unnamed; how his lie-detection works is unknown.
  • Whether he is “the mysterious guy in the Cadillac” is unresolved.
