The Sword of Kas is a unique weapon, “unique in all the universes”, that teaches, tests and possibly drinks the souls of those who bear it. Handing it to Vecna at Tovag Baragu produces cosmic imbalance.

TypeArtifact (sword)
Spanish entryEspada de Kas

Description

It appears wrapped in black cloaks and rags, held by unidentified tentacles. What identifies it is that “an eye opens”, called “the eye of God”; beside the eye “two pernas” are recorded, unexplained. A sword in the archive has a “robust hilt” and a “special sillo”, but this is not proven to be the Sword of Kas.

Properties

  • It teaches. Knowledge is received from the object: “you got that knowledge from the sword itself… it gave you arcane knowledge”.
  • It tests. It holds a trap aimed at its bearer: “this trap could have killed me”. It was neutralized by “a flash of justice” from its wielder; without it, the result would have been death.
  • It drinks. Probably, not certainly, “his sword can drink them to take them elsewhere”: drinking souls and carrying them to another plane.

History

  1. It was in the hands of a companion of a gesta: “you have the sword of Kas”.
  2. It was stolen through a ritual and passed into the hands of “the one who most fears the sword of Caz”, whose identity is not fixed.
  3. It was handed to Vecna at Tovag Baragu. Placing it with “those who can perform a terrible ritual” is what enables that ritual.

The Bequilians actively seek it and know “at least one story” about it.

Similar weapons

  • The Sun Sword (“sword of the sun”), received “by a light in hell”, to be recovered from the Valley of the Tempest with “the souls and answers”; its bearer said “my sword is emitting sunlight”. No record links it to the Sword of Kas.
  • The Holy Sword, a weapon against Balantru obtained by destroying the enemy’s underground base.
  • A sword kept “where Evita died”, and another seen inside a pustule surrounded by liquid, only its pommel showing; neither is confirmed as this weapon.
  • A sword recovered as expedition treasure was appraised at three hundred gold coins; it is not established that it is this one.

Open questions

  • Are the Sword of Kas and the Sun Sword one weapon or two?
  • What are the “special sillo” and the “two pernas”?
  • Who is “the one who most fears the sword of Caz”?
  • What ritual was enabled, and what did the imbalance cause?
  • Is the flash of justice a one-time grace or repeatable?
