Erzsébet is a witch with a Hungarian accent who became guardian of Taurus in 1888, a year after being shot with lead, and whose body is covered in bullet holes that never heal.

Description and history

Black dress, loose black hair, witch’s shoes. She is unique: no line or class of similar witches exists. Her bullet holes are permanent; their number, and whether all date from 1887, is not recorded.

In 1887 she “is simply a girl”. That year she is shot with lead, on orders of Wolf or Wolf’s order. In 1888 she is guardian of Taurus. Whether the shot caused her curse or revealed it is left in doubt. She was seen bound, hands behind her back, a prisoner of the U.S. Marshall at the bridge crossing.

Defenses

  • Hair. Prehensile, seizing anyone approaching from the front; “a little snake lives inside the hair”. “No recomiendo a nadie que se agarre del pelo” (“I don’t recommend anyone grab her by the hair”).
  • Scorpion. Her familiar, with which she meditates lying on the bed, empathically bound: “if she is wounded, the familiar will be there to poison the people who come near”.
  • Shotgun. Called la mata curas (“the priest-killer”).

Guardian of Taurus

The guardian can cancel another’s journey and leave them stranded. The office outlasts its holder: “Erzsébet is not here, but there is a guardian in her place. Rather, a vice-chancellor.”

A recorded plan calls for preventing the 1887 shot, then waiting until 1888 “and letting her become guardian”, then preventing her death in 1900, associated with Bulgaria.

Conflicting accounts

  • One voice has her fallen “in the previous battle” (“damned witch! Didn’t she die?”); the timeline fixes her death in 1900 in Bulgaria.

Open questions

  • Who appoints guardians, whether other signs have them, and to whom the vice-chancellor answers.
  • Why the U.S. Marshall holds her.
  • Whether a female figure at the prow, in a dark burgundy jacket and tight black trousers, is her.
  • Whether Erzsébet and Isabel name the same woman.
