Gorgon (Don Gorgona) is the major in charge of a fortress-outpost on the Mexico–United States border, a petrifying creature descended from the six-legged dragon, who lost his post after withholding the tribute he owed it.

Description

As a man he is “nearing sunset”, black-haired, in leather-like clothes, with a stern, dry gaze; his insignia mark him as an officer, “very rough and crude, but solid and legal”. His other form is the bull of Aries, “that violent gorgon”. His weapon is a petrifying gaze. The Bulls go with him, sometimes as mounts.

Role

The outpost is a toll-and-customs post with towers and a garrison. He owed the dragon tribute, including suspicious foreigners. He controls the crossing and must inform travelers of legal requirements: “I know I have no sign saying ‘information’ above me, but I will inform you.” Complaints go by signed formal grievance; he once signed one for the Mexicans over outstanding debts.

He was an ally of the company “not too long ago”, manned the machine gun of the insect ship, and fought in the Chihuahua desert in 1888.

Punishment

Gorgon withheld the tribute. The dragon knocked down his towers and killed some of his men, and he was removed (“intervened”). In reprisal, cold attacks killed people “even in Mexico”. He cried upward: “You, damned one, destroyed my towers!” The outpost has no known head.

Conflicting accounts

  • Some accounts treat Gorgon as a man; others speak of a “woman who had been thrown down from above”.

Open questions

  • Whether the bull form is disguise, alternate form or true body, and whether the Bulls are separate creatures or extensions of himself, are open.
  • The fortress’s name and towers, the exact tribute, and who now guards the crossing are unknown.
  • He revealed a “double” to Erzsébet; which, and why, is not recorded.
  • Whom his greeting «Muchísimos gustos oficiales» addresses, and how “Gorgona was the lord of the…” ends, are unknown.
