The Tree of Weapons is a living tree, fed with human bodies, that grows magic weapons. It is the only known source of magic arms.

Description

“It is a tree that grows swords.” Magic weapons, so far bows and arrows, hang from a trunk with ten small branches, “sewn” into the wood. It also bears bulb-like fruits likened to berries, mulberries, strawberries or dates, and ranunculi. It is the only one known.

Recorded yield: three bows at once, arrows “all magic”, two ranunculi taken by one person, and an enchantment judged “something very strange” that “should not be that”.

Origin

Someone handed over a seed carrying the intelligence of a weapons module, which makes its fruit armed metal. The Seekers planted it; the Priscianos list it as their “technological-magical project”; an unnamed order claims “the seed of our tree of weapons”.

Feeding

It is fed with compost of human bodies (“I will have to feed the tree with compost of your body”), obtained by sacrifice. The Bellaca (also spelled Avellaca) demands human sacrifices, with an explicit rule: a priest “must die”. An “ugly druidongo” is also mentioned beside it. Yields are unpredictable; one baffled those who got it. Young captives were rescued at the site, and a captive goblin could explain where it lies; she is its only named guide.

Location

It lies in a small grove on sublevel nine “of what is below”; whether that means the ninth floor or the ninth basement, and of what structure, is unclear.

Role

Extraordinary equipment is attributed to it; magic weapons of undeclared origin in a hunter’s lair are suspected, not confirmed, to come from it. Whoever controls it controls magic arms.

Open questions

  • Whether the name means the plant, the site, or both.
  • Whether it is the Gulthias Tree, or one entity with another tree-intelligence recorded elsewhere.
  • Whether the druidongo and the Bellaca are one authority or two keepers.
  • What the ten branches and the fruits are for.
  • How many sacrifices it needs, how often, and who performs them.
  • Who gave the seed to the Seekers, and whether it is the one the order claims. Its size, color, bark and smell are not recorded.
