Verónica is the sister of Chisman (also spelled Chismas), pulled out of her death through time, who became the Emerald Lady.

History

Officially, she died arriving by bicycle at the Little Italy pizzeria baking her fifteenth-birthday cakes, when a canister of ambrosia among the trays exploded.

Through Akasha, the seekers made their first step back in time: one week. With minimal anomaly they pulled her out the window as the glass burst and hid her in the Queens apartment of the time fold and chalk outlines. Displaced rather than undone, her death made her a temporal anomaly the world sought to correct.

Corridors lengthened and windows moved; a figure in green robes watched them, walked through walls, and threatened that they would pay. Resisting cost them dearly: a non-Euclidean-parabola bullet from the White Monkey’s service weapon struck him in the nape and kept accelerating toward world-breaking mass until a scythe appeared, summoned by something that forbade it. The dead figure was the guardian Doctor Metropolis. “Someone died… it is a form the city takes,” was said, and he left.

In the bathroom the girl, thought disturbed, laughed with someone unseen; when someone came out of the shower she tried to cover him with the robe. Later, given the robe, she put it on, left, and overcame her own nature: she stopped being bad. She took the fallen guardian’s place as the Emerald Lady, the form the city of New York takes when its keeper falls. Reality realigned: no more guardians came; the event no longer happened.

Her brother, told a week later of the destroyed pizzeria, knew she lived. Everyone believes her dead; she left in a green robe under a new identity.
