Golden Bones is the curse of StormJay Idaho, a progression that ends in petrification as a golden statuette and reincarnation as a Triaxian.

Progression

  1. Partial manifestation
  2. Permanent blindness
  3. Permanent Faerie Fire
  4. Petrification as a golden statuette
  5. Reincarnation as a Triaxian

The blindness is overcome only by radical transformation, not by “healing”. The curse is reinterpreted through Frazer’s The Golden Bough (golden branches open portals) and the Divine Comedy (plant souls awaiting judgment).

Appearances

The partial manifestation; the discussion in the Battle of the Mill; the complete petrification; and the reincarnation in the Boarding of the Dutchman on the Moon. Connections: Idaho, the Golden Queen, the Golden Child, Urge/Esqueletoro, El Dorado.

A plate shows the figure standing, half flesh in rags on the left flank and solid gold on the right, the eyes open and unseeing. Beside it hangs a branch of golden leaves; at its feet, other golden figurines stand whole, waiting.

Open questions

  • Urge says “I’ll put a gold cross on you, you’ll be my treasure”: he may be the curse’s guardian.
