Background

About a thousand years ago ambrosia-dripping meteorites fell near Alaska from atopic sites, from the irregularity opened with the ninth threshold (Terminus’s incursion points). Mars Inc. held an old silo nearby “for its philanthropic work”. Daedalus thought the asteroids unmined; they were not.

The raid

At 5:30 a.m., in hard cold, Colonel Jackson’s white-clad commandos camped two kilometers off, officially to defuse an old twentieth-century warhead; the Icarus Agency backed them. How illegal? If it failed, no one would know them; if not, more tests. While soldiers blew the south wall as a diversion, three seekers with an ambrosia-tuned Geiger counter crossed the least-guarded wall in a hundred feet of blue mist and opened a sealed metal door, killing no one. Fallen guards bore nape chips.

The laboratory

Inside, in bitter cold: tubes with humanoid figures, a computer running strange calculations, a nuclear source feeding four biological research tubes. Radiation-cooked ambrosia, far beyond street paco (drug paste), made four beings. The tubes were empty, the trees outside broken: they escaped or were taken (some perhaps cannot fly). Hence no ambrosia remained. These are the Four Reasons, named months later in a threat by the man of Mars: “I know four reasons why your mother would try to have your right to personhood taken away.”

The computer held a note naming the president with people of the nations, and a marked ring. The facility is now registered to the Foundation.
