Rat Killer is a biker who arrived in Gary in late winter 1987, killed the leaders of the two big West Side gangs and fused them into The Dogs, to push a new drug among the town’s teenagers. The companions beheaded him.

Description

Sharp beard, dark glasses at night, a cap, a Harley that sounded unlike any other. Territory did not move him: a new powder coming in through the Lake Michigan docks did — “the Ferrari of drugs”. Sometimes he hitched a sidecar carrying Ratita, a tiny, fetid, cursed goblinoid thing from no animal of this world.

Death

On the night of the hunt among the pines, the companion who sees what others do not, watching the Dogs from inside a mannequin shop, saw them all wearing skulls, like the deaths he had seen before: “Are they masks or not? Humanity is a mask.” Rat Killer fell through the rotten roof dragging a whole bathtub, rose in the dust as if he could see them somehow, drew a huge Rambo-style knife and smiled: “Look at the friends you had.” He wore a skull; whether it was a mask is undecided. The companions beheaded him and kept the drug; that debt lit the war with the Dogs and, behind them, with the spider web of Aunt Nancy. One of them sold his motorcycle for a thousand dollars.
