The Madeline-Murmur Pact is a deal sealed in the tumultuous spring of 1648 between Madeline Boulet and the Duke Murmur. In exchange for reaching the end of her maximum healthy human life expectancy safe, sound and sane, Madeline committed something the demon judged of equivalent value. No one who repeated the terms witnessed them exactly.
The visible confirmation came at a later meeting: an embrace from behind, in which Murmur, wearing a skull mask, loomed over Madeline with the familiarity of one who already has what he wants. The gesture was the seal.
The pact is the axis of Madeline’s demonic arc.
