The Iron Dog is a dog of living metal in the Gary chronicle of the New World, with metallic gleams and triple metal teeth, “as if it were Cerberus”. It is neither an animal nor a machine but metal of the same line as the god awakening beneath the city (Graz’zt, the Iron God).

History
- It entered the tunnels under Gary low and at full speed, sniffing the colored stones that marked the way.
- It snapped with one bite the iron chain holding a companion, and with two more freed Chantal. It acts as her dog and obeys her, a connection nobody asked for or explained.
- In the boiler-room fight it disemboweled one gladiator and tore out another’s jugular. Kendall left through the sewers unconscious on its back.
- The gesta (campaign-cycle) later remembers it as “your iron dog”, belonging to Pontiac, to the end. It is last seen in the Huron Mountains, five days before the eclipse, growling, ready “to enter hell”.
