| Type | Hospital ward |
| Location | Paris, overlooking the Seine |

Description
Seventeen beds on each side, polished wooden floors, white curtains drawn back to the columns between headboards, and at the end a great window over Paris through which distant domes can be seen. A sister in a black habit and white wimple tends a patient on the right with a water jug. In the foreground a young man in a hospital shirt, left arm in a sling, sits on the edge of his bed staring at nothing; beside him a bottle of some medicine, an untouched roll, an earthenware jug. Two plaques on the wall: “SILENCE — PRIÈRE D’ABRITER” and “L’HÔPITAL CHARITÉ DES PARIS”.
History
The ward received wounded after the act before Notre-Dame (those the halt of time had not stopped), the Bastille carnival, the Tournament of the Tower and the minor skirmishes of the Latin Quarter. The sister — always the same in appearance, though there were many — received them all. Physical wounds healed; others did not always: some left on their feet carrying a fragment of the cosmological body sewn into another part of their own, and carry it still.
