Description
Three banks of oars; a square sail with the Chi-Rho; a raven-shaped ram whose beak holds the siphon. On deck: archers, chained rowers, an officer in a conical helmet.
Properties
- Greek fire is an imperial secret kept in the palace, used only in combat; would-be thieves die before learning it.
- The siphon pumps under pressure and needs two operators: one pumps, one ignites.
- The Chi-Rho marks the ship as imperial, not merchant.
Role
It patrols the Bosphorus, the Black Sea and the eastern Mediterranean. Crews gather in the Forum; Hagia Sophia blesses major sailings; it fights alongside the Varangian Guard.
