Origin
The Mistral swords come from an ancient technique older than the empire. Their maker, the alien master of Malachite, also turned a brother and a sister into vampires: the lineage of the blades and the lineage of the blood came from the same source.
History
- Mistral speaks. Its first words to its bearer were about twins: “I have a sister.”
- A starved old figure came out of the dark depths with a katana and recognized Mistral as “the twin of my dark one”: the first knight of the order (Knights of the Scar of the Sun), expelled and hidden for centuries, living on rats and dark scriptures, spying on his sister through mirrors that see through walls. His blade was Sars; that night’s duel was twin against twin.
- The other sister came down from a fountain of ichor with six arms (Marilith). Among the swords of the tower guarding the egg was Cern, the lawful-evil blade once given to “the one with little horns” in an earlier gesta. The paladin swore to Mistral — “Mistral, I swear by Pelor that if…” — and, as Mistral had asked, split Cern in two. The dead sister’s piece was melted in an arcane forge burning day and night and returned to Mistral as its own edge.
- Freed of the rivalry, Mistral confessed that an old man at a court who sang the swords had told her she can be melted down, and that there is one better than her: Peacemaker, the third of the trio — not a holy sword, but a good entity, already opening its consciousness to whoever carries it.
