Debsi Island is a place in the Ardis Vala chronicle, neither in the valley nor in the dungeon: it is where someone came from, and the source of the grudge that person carried on arriving.

The orphanage

The island held an orphanage ruled by a woman of absolute grace, lips always painted, who fed on the children. Some vanished; others fell ill and died. She slept with a sword laid along the bed, the safe zone on one side of the blade, holding a child in her arms and at the last moment passing it to the other side.

The sword always had a guardian. The boy who became its guardian was also her accomplice: he watched. The day she brought twins and made him choose, he fled and took the sword with him (Roderick). She also traumatized and pursued the children, probably making them both executioners and victims. She met her end at some point, in another story.

The root was deeper than that ending explained. The Seekers found it below, in Ardis Vala, without looking for it: a nest of vampires, whose matters had mixed with a lineage come from the stars (Malachite). The orphanage vampire was a branch of it.

Fifteen years later, in the same valley, a lord (Caladan) would decide not to kill, bleeding several victims conservatively each night instead of draining one. The villages called this the white fever and called the girls he takes las caladas; they turn up one day at a house, which falls ill and dies as if drained. This is already present on Debsi Island, before Valakhan existed.
