The Black Egg is the object or creature at the center of the final arc of the Wordbreakers in the Vala corpus. The archive does not settle its nature, and the ambiguity may be intrinsic. The day-record that bears its name is among the longest in the corpus, so the Egg was handled, debated and feared, not simply found and destroyed.

Readings

  • A cosmic artifact: a world egg holding a potency older than creation.
  • A weapon that, broken or activated, releases a devastating force too wide to contain.
  • A creature in embryo, offspring of the Devourer or of the dragon guarding the Valley of the Tempest, about to be born.

Tower Ob Caligni

The day recording the Egg follows immediately after the assault on the Tower Ob Caligni, suggesting a causal sequence: the Egg may lie at the end of the road the tower closed, or be what the tower guarded unknown to anyone in Uruk.
