Dragutin Dimitrijević (1856-1917) was a historical Serbian colonel who founded and led the spy organization the Black Hand. In Uchronic Paris the vampire Apis is explicitly based on him.

Historical role
Conspirator, intelligence agent and instigator of the Sarajevo 1914 attack on Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Executed by a Serbian court-martial after the First World War.
He is portrayed in Balkan gala dress: dark uniform with epaulettes, crossed decorations, a saber on the left with a red tassel (the Black Hand’s mark), a waxed mustache and a sidelong gaze.
In Uchronic Paris
The name used is “Apis”, not Dimitrijević. His role is amplified: not just a political conspirator but a vampire, a “being of transcended non-death” who violates cosmic laws and draws the intervention of the Inevitables. The Serbian conspiracy is thus “supernaturalized”.
- Belgrade: Apis is held captive in the dungeons of Uchronic Belgrade and executed by the Time Bandits, who trade in eras.
- Sarajevo: Claude assumes the identity of Cvjetko Popović, a Serbian academic and possible Black Hand sympathizer, and takes part in the 1914 attack, a destination reached by time jump.
- The chain in the uchronia is “Apis → Cvjetko → attack”.
