Background
A miner who never wanted to open his family’s mine, he worked stone thirty years until a strange collapse, “deep as a mountain”, buried his family’s home. Taking wife and daughter for dead, he left with his axes. His wife had died shielding their daughter, Letizia, who escaped and grew up searching for him, learning languages as she asked.
Barrowmaze
He prayed to the dwarf saint Mick Borgen of the Two Axes; tavern keepers respected him because “dwarves make the best beer”. In the Barrowmaze, seeking the Tablets of Chaos with Klemidius, Héctor Risco and Kira, he led: a gelatinous cube that swallowed him, eight ghouls, a floating horror in a bone larder, each climbed and chopped “like a tree”. He alone allied with the mongrelmen below, by signs and the gift of an axe; they revealed the labyrinth’s map in two halves.
The ghouls wore masks of mithril, the ancient dwarves’ metal. The richest fitted itself to his face, fastened to his flesh: a death mask that guarded from the final blow, with a condition never learned.
Disappearance
After a battle against the undead, his room in Helix was found empty, things in order, the intended note unwritten. The Abbot said he was lost in the mist, alive, gone south, and might return. Letizia then reached Helix to take his place. The mist took him before the harvest; the final fire never reached him.
