The Bogeyman is a creature of Vala that announces itself in the first person (“yo soy Boogeyman”). It is the bogeyman of the stories that frighten children, but it hunts travelers and adventurers on the roads to give them “welcome to the world of the dead”.

Description

  • Only one is known. No lair has been found; it appears where the party is, beside posts and victims, always within touching distance.
  • The lure: a hat and “flamboyant garb of a circus performer, a casino worker” over a violet-blue tunic.
  • Underneath: its whole face catches fire (“just like Freddy Krueger”); in its bag are “sharp, sharp, sharp teeth”; its claws suddenly grow, like a dog’s. It wears boots.
  • It can stand against a post unseen.

Feeding on fear

It feeds on fear, not flesh. Its body regenerates while creatures in the area fear it; whoever stops fearing it “no longer counts” and is subtracted from the monster’s body. While the party fears it, it cannot be killed: the morale of those who face it is its vital point.

Equipment and touch

It carries seven magic items, detectable by anyone who knows how to look. Beside someone, it “touches him and heals him”.

Open questions

  • Whether it is born of the world or a summoned thing that dissipates with the smoke of combat.
  • Of the seven items only the count is known; whether the boots grant speed, invisibility or both is unknown.
  • Whether the face burns always or ignites when convenient.
  • Whom the healing touch favors: allies, victims or itself.
  • Whether it is unique in Vala or others wait beside other posts.
