Virginia, also called Carolina, is a region of mountains and plantation land east of the northern states of Antiterra, site of Fort Henry and source of the tobacco smoked across the world. Its people say “they call us either Virginia or Carolina”.
Geography
In June it is hot by day, and “it is not cold in the mountain”. The mountains mark the region’s edge. Fort Henry stands south of Richmond (the present-day Richmond); at least one other, unnamed fort lies in the same area.
Economy
Virginia’s known product is “an English Virginia tobacco made with the sweat and blood of Indians first and now of Blacks”, produced by forced labor. Who runs the plantations is not named.
Government
Virginia has its own government: “they even have their king”. An imperial title also weighs on it, “Empress Virginia”, associated with Rebeca in a Latinizing formula—«matraca de Rebeca filia potentis principal»—whose exact wording is not fixed. In the past the records reach, Pohuatán ruled there.
Events
The gesta (campaign-cycle) of the Crown of the North is set expressly in Virginia, and the flight of the eagles takes place on its territory.
Conflicting accounts
- Whether Virginia and Carolina are one region under two names, two neighbors confused, or a naming adjustment: the records allow all three readings.
- Most voices place it in the east, in the northern states; one mention calls it “a region in the south” under Pohuatán.
Open questions
- Who the king of Virginia is, and his relation to the “Empress”, is unknown.
- What filia potentis principal means, and in what language it is issued, is unknown.
- Towns, roads, ports and population are not recorded.
