The Republic of Sofía is a state north of the James River, beyond the Pass of Melum, governed by “supposedly neutral and wise laws” and devoted to natural philosophy. It is the most progressive power on the map, open to all, and known for advanced weapons.

| Spanish entry | República de Sofía |
Location
It covers land of Scottish Celtic peoples, “where the Scots more or less come.” Fort Henry is “almost on the border with the Republic of Sofía.” On maps it has its own color, given as orange and then as violet.
Government and customs
Its law is reputed neutral and wise, always “supposedly.” It is “a settlement where everyone was welcome,” regardless of origin or tradition, and it “gets along best with the Indians,” keeping better relations with native peoples than the other European powers. One figure of government is recorded, “a certain Jefferson.” The sources call it both a Republic and “that kingdom that is somewhat strange.”
Industry
“Some special weapons from Sofía that can have a special magazine” circulate outside its borders: custom magazines, named for their origin.
Standing
It is the yardstick of hospitality — “not even in the Republic of Sofía” — and the only republic of its kind.
Open questions
- Whether “Sofía” on the weapons names the state or an individual gunsmith; what “these people who are sort of with Sofía, the natural philosophy thing” designates.
- Jefferson’s office and the true form of government.
- What the special magazine does (the description is damaged).
- Its cities, architecture, size, population, currency and weapon prices.
- Whether “Melum” is the correct spelling, the distance from Fort Henry, and who guards the crossing.
- Whether its open door is deliberate border policy or a consequence of its legal doctrine.
