Gotland is an island at the center of the Baltic Sea, “the eye of the Baltic”: the main port of the Hanseatic League and “the land of the gods”, where Wodan first set foot. It now belongs to Sweden.

Port

All shipping to Hamburg, the League’s center, passes Gotland first; it was the League’s main port and strategic point in the Baltic. Timber and shipbuilding dominate its work.

Land of the gods

Wodan stepped first on Gotland, held to be the mythical land where the gods lived. Its people are of “pure blood”. The one named native is a red-haired would-be dragon hunter who “appeared floating in the Baltic Sea”, called Horatio, Oratiol or Lotario.

Decline

Gotland’s fall as a Hanseatic port and Sweden’s military eclipse are one movement; its mythic standing does not lapse.

Conflicting accounts

  • One account ends Swedish importance at the battle of Poltava (1709).
  • Another, from the same voice: “until 1815 Sweden had importance in the battles of the world”.

Open questions

  • Its coasts, towns, port, buildings and climate are not described.
  • What “pure blood” means, and whether sangre tonario is an in-world term or a mishearing, is unknown.
  • Whether Wodan is an active god in Antiterra or only an antecedent is unresolved.
  • What links timber and shipbuilding to dragon hunting is unexplained.
  • A fragment (“Gotland invaded one, at first, was related to such”) hints at invasion or alliance.
