Venice of the Strata is notebook C63, kept by the chronicler during the second half of November 2017 in Venice. It contains the founding diagram of ATEM, written on November 21, 2017, seven years before the Archive had a name.

Background

The chronicler is the same who wrote the Parisian notebook of 2010–2011, where the Cronoputas (“Chrono-whores”) and the Charon of the Seine were born. In Venice he was ill (he notes “La muerte en Venecia, Mann”), sat in the sun at Rialto cafés, visited the Correr Museum near St. Mark’s and the Caffè Florian, founded in 1720.

Contents

Calvino’s six memos (November 11)

He arrived reading Italo Calvino’s Six Memos for the Next Millennium and listed Lightness, Quickness, Exactitude, Visibility and Multiplicity, adding a sixth, Consistency. In the same entry: “Homo Ludens, el que juega, tiene libertad” (“Homo Ludens, the one who plays, is free”), bringing Huizinga’s Homo Ludens into the Archive. On June 23, 2018, in C64, he added “memes” in red: the six memos became six memes.

The clinamen (November 14 and 28)

The November 14 text recounts illness and walks: spaghetti all’amatriciana, the Rialto sun, a dream of a spoon debt, gulls that eat better than tourists. On November 28 he wrote over it in pink a palimpsest layer: “El juego de Dios permitió la creación. Los átomos caían paralelos, pero si no Dios, un evento, el clinamen, una alteración, hizo que uno golpeara al otro, la primera línea que cruzó la caída” (“God’s game allowed creation. The atoms fell parallel, but if not God, an event, the clinamen, an alteration, made one strike another, the first line that crossed the fall”). The clinamen of Lucretius entered ATEM doctrine as a theory of narrative creation: constraint (rules of the game) + deviation (clinamen) = emergence.

In the margin of the same day he wrote “Stimmung” in pink, untranslated (mood, atmosphere, tuning); it became an operative category of the whole Archive.

The girl in the canal (November 14)

A young woman fell into a canal while taking a photograph; the chronicler pulled her out, thigh-deep in water. Her boyfriend did not thank him and photographed her soaked, covered in algae. He notes that Venice has no cars and so no traffic sacrifices, while photography receives constant offerings.

The founding diagram (November 21)

Written in violet and black:

  • “El tiempo es un curador. Te deja las cosas en estratos, en medio de procesos” (“Time is a curator. It leaves things in strata, in the middle of processes”).
  • “Post-depositional processes, N and C transformations.”
  • Aggregator → traces (unconscious; artifacts on the same platform, same level).
  • Montage → messages (an intention to coalesce elements into a narrative, a judgment, a communication).
  • Archive → memories (conjunction around a theme, a historical condition).

The N (Natural) and C (Cultural) transformations are terminology from Renfrew and Bahn, the archaeology manual the chronicler uses in his trade. The notebook is treated as a site, each ink layer as a horizon.

Legacy

  • Clinamen: narrative creation, palimpsest layers.
  • Six memes: the playful archive, Homo Ludens.
  • Archive: ATEM’s founding method.
  • Time as curator.
  • Stimmung.
  • Photography as a minor deity of the Postmodern Pantheon.

The Archive received the name ATEM in 2024, in notebook C97. The notebook also records, on November 16, the purchase of notebook C65.
