The trial
The chamber holds a mosaic of judgment and execution, three red orbs in a bowl, and a seated white marble knight with a great sword across his lap. A voice poses the case: a young mother with no family, her child starving, robbed the baker knowing the law. Her fate: look the other way; imprison mother and child; or imprison the mother and give the child and the loaf to the baker. The Seekers voted to look the other way. The marble took on features and stepped down, empty scabbard, sword laid aside.
He spoke of justice: “Who deserves to live and who deserves to die?… There was a trial before you and you chose to face it with steel. Iron kills, iron dies.” And: “How many orphans will there be when the trolls raze the capital of Archontos with what you gave them? The king said he would not use it offensively. It was a lie.”
The price
“There is another mage in the tower who plays chess with his companion. His immortality is in installments, and he cannot pay them. The cost of his friend’s life is the egg” (the Egg of Ritornelo): bring the offering and he will be returned unharmed. Simón also said that these fortresses once endowed the plain of infinite portals, a place oriented toward the primordial abyss, which is why demons always found it so easy to arrive.
When the companion bearing the inquisitor’s badge refused to judge, Simón offered him his chair: “Come, sit, if you think you deserve it.” No one sat. He became a statue again, awaiting the offering, which — as far as is recorded — never came.
