The voyage

In the first week of sailing the travelers lose sight of the coast and put in at Sicily. From there they continue to the eastern Mediterranean, sailing within sight of the coast, as is done by those who are not Muslim. The destination of the crossing is Cyprus.

Origin of the factions

The Ghibellines take their name from the Swabian followers of Frederick II Hohenstaufen, king of Sicily, who asserted his rights in the Empire against Otto IV of Brunswick. The Germanic battle cries gave the nicknames that the Italians adopted. This origin also explains the Neri, one of the factions.
