The Neri (“the Blacks”) are one of the two halves into which the Guelph party splits in 1300, opposite the Bianchi, the Whites. The possibility of a civil war between the two hangs over the chronicle.

Description
- The Neri are the old, violent families, with the Donati at their head, and they side with the pope. The pope, Boniface VIII, backs them through the bankers Spini.
- There are 39 Guelph families against 33 Ghibelline families, and the Guelphs later divide into whites and blacks. The Bianchi/Neri division dates to 1 May 1300.
- The founding episode of the conflict is the brawl between Buondelmonte, the Amidei and the Donati, on an Easter Sunday at the exit of the Ponte Vecchio.
