The Peace of Lodi is the pact that held Italy together from 1454 to 1494. Five powers dominate the peninsula (Venice, the Papal States, Naples, Milan and Florence) and have been bound by it for forty years. It was forged by the first Francesco Sforza and the old Cosimo de Medici.

The break
The Invisible Cities chronicle takes place at the moment the balance breaks. The French army, with its thousands of men and eight hundred prostitutes, reaches Naples without anyone offering battle, and then withdraws. The peace was not broken in a battle; it was broken because nobody fought one.
