Nature

There was no Pax Imperium, a peace imposed by order. There was its reverse: a peace bought by surrendering territory, the joints of the multiverse, to the darkness. From that concession flows the “shadow corruption” that permeates the whole Antiterra cycle and that explains why the roads between platforms and worlds are taken.

Role

  • It closes the First War of the Shadows and prepares the Second. The Archive keeps it as the key to the Second War: the state of affairs that war reacts against, the old pact whose bill is still being paid.
  • The shadows are the beneficiaries: they keep what lies between the worlds.
  • It was formulated in a season-opening talk of Invisible Cities, in the same stretch that sets out the lineage of Khalim and the figure of Barbatos. Its precise contours are only partly set out.
