Ogun Onire, the Lord of Iron or Iron Lord, is the orisha of iron and forge in Gary, god of Chantal: he revived her when she lay breathless with a bullet in her chest, and has collected tribute since.

History

He first appeared as a bold line in a chance-opened book: “OGUN or NIBRA… is of iron… one of the most powerful of all.” Only after iron lords and a sleeping Iron God emerged was this read as the enemy’s first shadow.

Cult

His rule: one gives and he returns. Offerings thrown into the swamp, like northern treasure into waters, bring something back. Glob sank his greatsword; Pontiac buys things and gives or throws them away; others toy with his returns too. In the swamp he sounds like an eternal smith.

Possible faces

The African god on Doña Ilva’s wall; “Mister Gan” of firearms, whose weapons are carried to him in a coffin; a sleeping, blind god chained on an altar in the Indian cemetery, asked “Who chains you?” Their unity is not asserted; all are metal, and in Gary metal has will.

Open questions

  • How this life-giving iron god relates to the Iron God whose waking would reset the cosmos, both beneath the city, is unresolved. Chantal proposed spreading Ogun Onire’s word while walking toward the mountain where the other sleeps.
