Description

Among the antiques, under a mahogany nightstand with pseudo-rococo motifs, lay a dusty old magnetic answering machine that no one had put there or ever seen. The power cut woke it: white noise, tape hiss. It could not be hacked — a magnetic pulse combined with white noise, a code — and it was not digital but a magnetic layer of something recorded “atemporally”. The White Monkey analyzed the pulse.

Daedalus had recorded it in that very room shortly before losing contact; the group had lived a whole week in that house without ever seeing it — ripples in reality, folds, a room that was twice the same room. He was being forcibly disconnected; they were looking for him, or had already caught him. The warning points at Mars Inc.

Fighting Chance

Travel in time cannot modify what has happened — reality corrects itself, or it happens again — but serves for observation. So instead of rescuing him, they proposed to give Daedalus a tool for his journey: the White Monkey’s anchoring weapon, dismantled piece by piece, to be left where it had once been — in the first laboratory, in the hands of the scientists of the Bridal Shop — in case it served. If reality corrects it first, the chance is lost. The discussion remains open.
