The Interfectors (los interfectores) are the sect-police of executioners who provide security in theocratic Florence of the Invisible Cities. They carry axes and wear black leather trousers, a smock and a hood.
Description
They patrol under banners marked with Greek letters; the Ro patrol, that of Christ, is the most famous. Their first initiates came from the guild of Florence’s woodcutters, the same hardy men of the hills from which Domingo and his caravan of black masks came.
History
They descend from the confraternity-church founded by Luca around 1300, in the era of White and Black Guelphs, of Dante reciting invocations and of the French chaplain Jean de Chalon, when he dreamed of a church born of the people. The dream was fulfilled two hundred years later and contaminated: the popular church became a theocratic body of punishment.
Their ten leaders have had a mythic ascent and answer to Luca as regent. They appear at the end of the Florence season of the Invisible Cities, as the city’s police.
