Domingo, the Dog of God (domini canis) is a werewolf, an animal-like angel with retractable silver claws, who serves Luca in the caravan of the red cross in Invisible Cities.
| Type | Character (werewolf / animal angel) |
| Master | Luca |
| Spanish entry | Domingo, el Perro de Dios |
Description
He travels in the caravan of the red cross: twenty-five priests in white robes guarded by rough men like woodcutters wearing black masks that fall to their shoulders, men of the Inquisition. He breathes heavily and watches everyone; when challenged he shows claws the size of a curved sword, gleaming silver.
He obeys Luca absolutely (“your wishes are orders, as always”) and always offers the same — to clean up, to handle it, to kill: “Sir… we ride, sir. Shall I take care of it? Here someone must be killed.” Luca always stops him: no one, without blood. He carries out his errands coldly — going on a mission with a cleric and some woodcutters, intercepting a ship — and leaves the pagans dark sentences about the last day.
The masked woodcutters
The custodian-inquisitors of Luca’s church descend from the poor of the Florentine hills, so wretched they sometimes wore bark, driven out by the wars of Guelphs and Ghibellines in pre-plague Italy: generations of very hard, fanatical men, first followers of Luca’s old dream of a church born of the people, fulfilled two centuries later and contaminated. From the same root will come the Interfectors.
