The Book of Eclipses is a half-eaten, half-burned notebook that survived the violent death of its owner, the woman of the phonograph ( Mamushka), in the Gary (New World) chronicle. It dates eclipses a century apart and marks platform coordinates.

Finding

The woman was blown to pieces; the apparatus was ruined, its horn still hot. The notebook was the loot, though it took a while to realize they had just killed the only person in this world who could read it.

Contents

Clippings from old occult magazines mixed with recent notes in a nervous hand. The oldest entries mark eclipses of different eras, every 100 or 101 years, each with an astrological diagram of conjunctions:

  • 1788: London.
  • 1887: Diamond Lake, Chicago.
  • 1987: Iron Mountain, 14 April. Two weeks remained when they read it. “I don’t know if the world ends, but these three periods are connected somehow.”

Operational material:

  • “Coordinates: possible platforms”: elements (fire, earth), cardinal points, numbers. The Aries platform is Mexico, connected with Cancer, which is Iron Mountain (“they will come out from here”).
  • Engravings of pentacle configurations: five points that conjure inward or restrain; the circles can be inverted depending on whether used to call or to trap.
  • A closing poem about the island of Antigua: Cancer connected to the tropic.

A detective’s conclusion: on the night of the eclipse Iron Mountain would connect with Antigua, an island surrounded by water, an opening to water. The conjunction could also open to fire, and that was the problem.
