In Antiterra the guillotine is not an engineers’ invention but a manifestation of Death, summoned in the square of Notre-Dame in 1717 A.D.A. by burning one of the twenty-four hosts.

Origin

At the climax of the Paris arc, as the city rose in hunger, one of the liberators knelt on a pedestal and burned a host invoking “the forces of death” — “the whole established order must perish so that a new order may be reborn”. From a black, geometric veil rose Death, and with it the guillotine, greeted with an astonished “You invented it!” It is the second of the two powers of the double invocation, the dark twin of the Guardian of Scorpio summoned beside it.

Meaning

The machine is the guardian of the house of death and its regeneration — the platform of Scorpio (Guardians) — summed up in a phrase that runs through the campaign: “the revolution that eats its children”. The Gate opened in that square leads to the plane of negative energy.
