Events

The most remote room at the end of a long corridor; blinds half closed, smoke, the Boston cold outside. Camille waited by the window; Irti brought in the journalist, his nose bandaged since the day before, sat him down and stood behind him. Camille did not ask; she stated. Teddy answered with all he had learned: the professor’s last friend, the beneficiary of a vanished will, the fire at the book depot.

She unwrapped the dagger from a black handkerchief, set a heel on the armchair between his legs and ran the flat of the blade over his cheek and neck. Teddy held her gaze and pointed to his broken nose as proof. “I’ve seen worse,” Camille conceded. “There are two kinds of men: those who commit completely, and those who have nothing.”

Outcome

Teddy would travel to Egypt with them and publish nothing for now; in exchange they would use his skills to get what was out of their reach. Irti, who during the shooting had already decided not to eliminate him because courage is respected, pushed him toward her without grabbing him.
