History
He had been seen before without being recognized: the short-haired assistant in the cocoon chamber who struck a blond man’s chest on the altar like a piece that was no good. Later, with three companions chained head-down in a high-ceilinged torture room — the rack, the iron maiden, the jars, two tunnels — he passed by in his beret, murmured “I can’t let them do this to Falco’s nephew” (Colonel Falco), and winked. Pontiac bought him at once: “Doc, let me go and I’ll make you a millionaire.” He freed them (among them Sasha), returned their things, took the bills and asked one thing: “go now… and now hit me hard.” Pontiac beat him down under the stretcher to cover for him.
Days later, when the group went down again and alarms sounded, two figures came running through the tunnels: a big-headed man and a man in a beret with a blaster. Ray’s energy grenades brought the roof down and killed both. Only then did they learn whom they had killed. Pontiac picked up the still-warm blaster — “now I see you saved us more than once” — and took his wallet: a photo with his wife and an undelivered letter.
Legacy
The blaster kept firing throughout the gesta in Pontiac’s hands. The letter has never reached its destination — one of the few loose ends of the New World cycle with no cosmic excuse.
