Colette is a waitress at the tavern Saint Pierre, one of the everyday gathering places of the Quartier Saint-Germain during the turbulent months of the Fronde. She is a constant presence there: she knows the regulars, keeps silent when it suits, and is not unaware of what is murmured between tables.
In 1648, when the events take place, she is expecting a child, which ties her to the tavern and the network of people who frequent it.
