Andromalius is a young male demon whose sole office is to punish thieves, and the name of a sorcery of the same purpose that acts on bodies. He can be summoned in uninhabited forests and made a pact with Jean.
| Type | Demon |
| Office | Punisher of thieves |
| Signs | Black feathers; serpent form; mark on the back |
| Spanish entry | Andromalius |
Nature
“Andro means male”: youth and male sex are fixed traits. When he wanted to come out “he slid out like a serpent”; the serpent form is his recorded manifestation, not necessarily his only one. His presence is announced by black feathers. He leaves a lasting mark on the back of those who belong to him (“you saw the serpent and all”), and holds total power over its bearer; yet he can be ordered to leave. He has power to “operate on life and death”.
Office
He exists to punish thieves. His jurisdiction is triggered by conduct, not invocation: whoever breaks in and smashes things falls under his gaze. Bodies struck by his magic are left “still writhing on the ground”.
Creature and power
As a creature, he is a single named demon, summonable and open to pacts, with a place in the demonic hierarchy and peers: “besides, I have friends”. As a power, “Andromalius” names “a kind of sorcery used to punish thieves”, applied to bodies, whose visible effect is the animation of corpses.
Summoning and pact
He can be called “almost at any hour” in forests that must be uninhabited. There he answers, negotiates and may agree to accompany the caller. With Jean the pact was sealed with an embrace: “Of course. I’ll go with you.”
England, 1605
He claims to have been in England “to blow up Parliament” on the fifth of November, 1605, and recites in English: “Remember, remember the Fifth of November.” He is said to “live in many times”.
Conflicting accounts
- One account calls him “superior in hierarchy”; another, “not lesser, not the greatest either”.
- Some describe his mark as a serpent on the back; older testimonies say his mark is the anchor.
Open questions
- The price of his pact, the exact punishment, what counts as theft, and why theft is his only matter are unrecorded.
- Whether others can perform the sorcery that bears his name is unknown.
