The Texas Rangers are a law-enforcement body of Texas that patrols the state and its border, known for the doctrine “One riot, one ranger.”

Status and jurisdiction

The Rangers are distinct from the U.S. Marshals and the State Police, which cover the same line. Order in Texas rests on individuals, not masses of troops; the Rangers are reputed “very tough”. People speak of a “Texas Ranger who has exceeded his functions”.

They decide who is an outlaw in Texas, where outlaws are common. Having them as enemies changes a man’s standing across the territory.

Their integrity is uneven: “they say there’s one corrupt, others aren’t”, and the corrupt one may be the one pursuing a given group.

Summoning

From the border one can “call the Texas Rangers” for reinforcements. Despite three overlapping authorities, people still ask for “someone to come and protect us”.

The Austin capitol

In Austin a “seventh wonder” has just been built: a huge neoclassical government house holding the government, courts and a gallows under one roof.

Territory

The Texan prairies are “greener” than other regions. Crossing the state from Louisiana took a week. Though Texas lies thousands of kilometers from the Arctic, “there are ways to get there”.

Open questions

  • Their appearance, arms, mount, headquarters, numbers and chain of command.
  • How they are summoned and how fast they arrive; how jurisdiction is shared with the Marshals and State Police.
  • Who the corrupt ranger and the one who overstepped are; who built the Austin building, and why it is a “seventh wonder”.
  • Which border, exactly, they patrol.
