A demiplane is a “small fragment of portable reality”: a finite piece of world with its own clock, lodged inside a larger plane. Whoever enters truly ages while the world outside barely moves.

Description
- The one housing Magda’s refuge, inside the Plane of Dreams, is a region of hectares around a wooded cathedral-refuge, on “vigorous land, of abundant food, where there are small dinosaurs”.
- Another is a cold fjord-like territory “where the waves beat”, with “no abundance at all”, not a tree. It “is not the one where time goes crazy”.
- Some are measured in cubes: one is “cubic”, 170×170×170 cubes of ten feet per side.
Gates
Gates lead in and out. The one used to leave the demiplane of Horatiol “seemed almost ridiculous”, yet worked. According to the scroll, the journey “takes four hours”. Gates can be closed: “the entrances were closed to that demiplane where this new kingdom is gestating”.
Time and use
Aging inside is real; outside time is almost nil. Demiplanes serve to rest (“this place of dream rested us”) and to train: “you can stay a year here, age a year, and return to the primary material plane”.
Making
Someone “generates a demiplane in the astral because time becomes space”; it opened between Alpha Centauri and Earth, two light-years along the passage. “The platforms can sometimes work as different planes. At least as demiplanes” (see Zodiacal Platforms).
Contents
- In the demiplane of Horatiol the companions anchored the seed of Atlantis, “a seed that would grow until perhaps raising the sunken city”.
- In another, which was absorbed, lies the infinity gem.
- In a third “this new kingdom is gestating”.
Conflicting accounts
- “A week here and in reality only a minute passes”; or “one day in the demiplane is one hour in reality”.
- The astral demiplane lies two light-years along the passage; others say four.
- Horatiol may be a place or a dreamer (also written Oratiol) whose personal dream demiplane the companions visited.
Open questions
- Whether each demiplane keeps its own time ratio is unknown; the fjord’s is not recorded.
- Who can build one, and at what cost, is unknown.
- Who closed the new kingdom’s gates, and whether they can reopen, is unknown.
- What sets each one’s climate and fertility, and whether all are cubic, is unknown.
- What “absorbed” means for the gem’s demiplane, and by whom, is unknown.
