Marina, also called Agua Marina, is a five-meter sea goddess met on the open sea on the route to La Londra. In exchange for a good fight and the bodies of all who fall in it, she drives ships across the water.
| Type | Sea goddess |
| Spanish entry | Marina |
Description
She stands on the waves, anthropomorphic, “strong and well defined, liquid”, muscles visible in a body of shaped water, with blue hair; “like a giant guy standing there”. Her teeth are described both as “made of pearls” and as “dog’s teeth”: canine teeth of pearl. When she works, the sea moves, not she: “the waters begin to stir below”. No cult, temple or other sea goddess is recorded.
Law
«Mujer del mar, permanece en el mar o terminará sin pies» (“Woman of the sea, stay in the sea or you will end up without feet”). Whether curse, law of the world or anatomy is not stated; she does not leave the water.
The pact
Her terms: “they promise me a good fight and also to hand over to me all the bodies that fall”. Every death in the fight is dedicated to her. With the pact fulfilled, she stirs the water under the hull and the ship “moves fast” toward La Londra without sail or oar, three or four hours from the meeting point. She is found around seven in the evening.
The invocation: «Guíanos a tu amarcha hacia la Londra, por favor» (“Guide us to your amarcha toward La Londra, please”).
Her sea
Below the surface “there is much peace” and “much oxygen matter”. Above and on the shore, “sea creatures, half fishlike” search for a chest, and dead sea creatures lie on the coast. Whether the fishlike creatures serve her is not established.
Open questions
- What amarcha means (between amargura, “bitterness”, and marcha, “march”) is undecided.
- How the bodies are delivered, whether she serves anyone who pays, and what befalls one who does not deliver are unknown.
- Whether she speaks, in what language, and whether “Agua Marina” is a ritual name are unknown.
- How far her stretch of sea extends is unknown.
- Aboard the ship a Marina was recorded among the crew (“Whose turn is it? Marina doesn’t know what’s going on. No, Marina left”); whether she is the goddess, another person or a confused name is not established.
