The Laks are emotionless constructs — magical creations, not born beings — whose sole function is to maintain the separation between the planes of reality and to execute those who violate those limits: «Matan a los violadores etcétera de estos límites» (“They kill the violators etcetera of these limits”). They are called “a wall of law”.

Role
“They are great watchers”: their sight is superior and they detect time breaches as they occur. Their location is functional rather than geographic: they appear wherever a planar limit must be upheld, “especially” at the borders of the elemental planes. They travel between the planes and belong to none. No one owns them.
Powers and abilities
- Against a violator of planar limits the base response is execution, but their repertoire also includes capture, dispelling, teleportation, disintegration and walls of force.
- They are highly resistant to magic.
- “They know how to use many weapons at once.”
- “They are great conversationalists”: negotiation is possible, but only “if it is the only way”.
Being emotionless constructs, they cannot be corrupted. They are the mechanism by which the planes remain distinct.
Open questions
- Their form, material, size and how many limbs wield their many weapons.
- Who built them, and whether the builder still exists.
- How many there are, and whether they guard some limits more zealously than others.
- What a Lak accepts or grants in negotiation.
- What exactly counts as a violation, given that they themselves travel between planes.
- How the time breaches they detect relate to the separation of planes they guard.
