La Llorona (the Weeping Woman) is a fleshless specter of a woman drowned as a witch, who does not rest until the injustice that caused her death is resolved. At least one dwells in the Cavern of Tears; las lloronas del mar (“the weeping women of the sea”) are a class of creature.
| Type | Specter |
| Spanish entry | La Llorona |
Description
She has no body to strike. Her figure bears ectoplasmic marks of the “lashes they gave her”, “spectral evidence that she suffered in life”: she was flogged before being drowned. “La Llorona simply clasps her hands.”
Powers
- Her touch feels like “a cold in the chest, a harsh spasm”.
- Ordinary weapons are useless: she is “immune to everything normal, even when struck with a weapon”. Magical weapons harm her, but only by half.
- As Nuestra Señora Llorona (“Our Lady the Weeping Woman”) she drains the body’s constitution, and that loss is not healed by sleep.
History
Her story was learned by speaking to her, not by fighting her. Of her death she said only: «La ahogaron por bruja» (“They drowned her as a witch”). Those of her kind do not rest until the injustice that led to their death is resolved: reparation, not violence, dissolves them.
In the Cavern of Tears she “is the first thing that happens” on entering.
Open questions
- Her face, clothing, size and weeping.
- How many lloronas exist, and why they are called “of the sea” when at least one lives in a cavern.
- Whether the Cavern of Tears is their cradle, tomb or dwelling.
- Who drowned her, and what would settle the wrong.
- How much constitution her touch takes, and whether any remedy exists.
