The Hymn of Kosovo is a piece of medieval music that sounds at the end of the Battle of Kosovo in 1389 of the uchrony. It is “the hymn of the battle”: of that battle and no other.

Setting

The battle is fought on a plain between mountains and rivers, in the zone of “the last military refuges”. The battlefield “shall measure at most 5 by 5 miles”, which forces tens of thousands of combatants, Serbs on one side and Ottomans on the other, to settle the battle in a single day. Rain falls on the field.

The hymn

It sounds “at the end of the battle of Kosovo”, not before or during it, and is called “spectacular”. The year 1389 is key for the Serbs “because it is the date on which they lost the war”: the hymn is music over a defeat. It grants no advantage or protection, and no rule fixes who may sing it.

Timeline

Thomas and his companions have forty days of preparation before the battle. According to an unnamed magical consultation, “the battle is five days away”; whether the five days fall within the forty is not recorded. The year 1389 also appears among the significant years of Uchronic Paris.

Open questions

  • Its lyrics and language are not recorded.
  • Who sings it (one side, both, the survivors, a later office), and with voices or instruments?
  • Does it exist outside Kosovo and 1389?
  • What are “the last military refuges”, and is the rain a fixed feature of the day?
  • Lazar and Vidovdan are mentioned near 1389 without facts attached.
