Realm and troops

She is called “the witch” and “a sorceress”; travelers’ maps mark “the realm of Deino”. “People like Deino” lived there before the recent adventurers arrived.

Her nearly fifty beastmen are “militarily formed”, with “various conturbios” (Roman-style insignia); several are porcine, among them one named Abroide Porcino. They were legionaries and keep their formation and insignia. Deino has “something somewhat Circe-like”: she transformed them and has held them under spell or control for two hundred years.

Pacts

“She has something to do with pacts.” She gives magic items to mortals; Alumine himself used one she had given. Genies carry out her deals: they fulfilled her side of a deal made while she was a prisoner. She is credited with authority over deals and over opening “new kinds of deals”.

“She likes to eat rich boys” — whether literally, as a pact condition, or as reputation is not established.

Relationships

  • Enemy: Lord Petarmis, according to the record of the cavern witch.
  • The record mentions “Deino, his/her mother”, without saying whose.

Conflicting accounts

  • She was once mentioned as dead; later it was established that “Deino is alive”.
  • She is named “prisoner Deino” and also lady of a realm with troops; the order of captivity and rule, and who held her, are unresolved.

Open questions

  • Her appearance, age and voice.
  • The spelling of conturbios, and whether insignia mark individuals or units.
  • What her pacts cost and what the “new kinds of deals” are.
  • The limits, entrances and distances of her realm.
