A chronomancer is “someone who handles the magic of time because he was always tangled up in adjusting reality by modifying it with magic”. The word covers both the scholar who writes universal history and keeps the data of the past, and the mage who, at high levels, intervenes in time.

The mark
The body declares the chronomancer: in moments of manifestation, «se le empiezan a escribir unas cosas acá en el rostro» (“things start to be written here on his face”).
The chronomancer watch
The chronomancer watch is a handheld watch taken from the pocket and touched. Those nearby “feel their bodies accelerated”: it speeds up the metabolism and physical abilities of those who touch it and allows selective activation of spells. It works in motion, even on trains. A tradeable magic item, it does not prove the office.
Grades
- Low: scholarship. The chronomancer is consulted for the data of the past (“the brother is a chronomancer, so he can help us with data”). The first author of a universal history, a learned Arab from a long family of scholars, was known as a chronomancer.
- High: intervention. “At the high levels they do handle time”: they adjust reality with magic and travel in time. “They often look at the stars.”
They are few and ranked: a chief chronomancer stands above the rest; Cronamon may be his son or avatar. Lesser ones are scattered, some siblings of ordinary people. The records distinguish users of the name from “those who really are chronomancers”.
The eternal war
There is “a war that is, sadly, eternal” between the chronomancers and their enemies: patriarchs, centaurs and repressive authorities.
Open questions
- What the facial marks say; whether they fade.
- The watch’s material, how long its effect lasts, and its price.
- What separates the true chronomancer from the bearer of the name; how one rises to chief.
- Why patriarchs, centaurs and repressive authorities share a side, and what the war is over.
- The name of the Arab who wrote the first universal history.
