Axis is a metropolis of absolute order whose golden walls, besieged by chaos, come undone and rebuild themselves “with these golden mathematical equations”. It is a single, central city that hosts permanent embassies of other powers.

Description
- Silver streets, buildings of glass and steel, no ornament, maximum function: “a perfect modern architecture”. Its style is compared both to “a city of 2010” and to “2100 or so”, unreconciled.
- Its forms “were drawn in another era, but the technology to make them does not exist”; Axis builds them without limit.
- There are echoes of ancient tradition (the Casa Rosada is cited) and scattered cave-like buildings, “the best cave there ever was”, beautiful and functional.
- Its only animals are mechanical owls, “constructs”, which serve as guardians.
- The guard is provided by the axiomites, the native population.
Law as architecture
In the Ministry of Reja or Resca (spelling disputed) one cannot get lost by following directions written on a card: the building is walked by instruction. What it administers is not recorded.
Guests and the closed precinct
- Embassies of the Devils and of Archon coexist within the walls, and with them “all is well”. Axis is neutral ground for the great powers as long as they keep its order.
- One precinct is closed by another golden wall; what lies inside “is not known”, except that it houses a trial of heroes, whose founder and conditions of entry are unknown.
Open questions
- Its plane, and what separates it from the chaos.
- Who built the wall, and whether anyone operates the equations.
- Its population, trade and currency.
- Whether the cave-like buildings are a district, older remains or a style.
- Whether the axiomites are citizens or a legal caste, and who governs them.
- A factory of Inevitables inside the city is rumored but not affirmed.
