Verma / Avernus is an underworld reached through gates in the Forest of Black Poplars. “The Verma” is an alternative name for Avernus.
It has the structure of seven Dantean circles. Its literary references are the Divine Comedy and the Aeneid. In agrarian and ecological Latin literature, the entrances to the underworld lie in forests of black poplars. The Barge of the Dead sails these waters.
