Varys Docalfar is a drow (or drow-looking) swordsman of about 700 years who rides a winged white steed and guides travelers in the Shadowfell. He has never used the name Docalfar before witnesses: there he introduces himself as Varys Mulawyr.

Description

His skin is black “like the darkness of the sky”, almost violet; his body is very wiry, “more agile than a cat”, of superior dexterity. He fights with quick little cuts rather than strength, using two short swords, a colada and a tizona, told apart only by their hilts, one gray, one black. He wears leather armor that looks like leather clothing.

His mount is a white winged horse with wings “like a white eagle’s”; it rises and “climbs the air”, and the pair “can beat the wind”. He is seen from below, flying down. No other creature of its kind is recorded.

Role

He acts as swordsman, as traveler with vertical access, and as guide in the Shadowfell, which cannot be entered without one. He flies with an unnamed sorcerer and a fire genie that “follows the trail”: the genie tracks from above, the sorcerer works at range, Varys brings flight and blade. One scrying found him in bed with three women. He has no recorded residence.

Lineage

An Ethiopian origin, with mention of the Abyss, is accepted for a character whose presumed mother would be ZARA; whether that lineage is Varys’s is not fixed. That character’s name wavered between “Urion” and “Valente?“.

Open questions

  • Are Docalfar and Mulawyr one entity, two faces of one creature, or two characters confused?
  • He may use a “mask of many forms” to look drow; if so, the described appearance is the mask’s.
  • Why two swords, and what distinguishes them beyond hilt color, is unknown.
  • What entitles him to guide in the Shadowfell, and his fee, are unknown.
  • Who the sorcerer and genie are, how the alliance formed, where the steed came from, and how he filled 700 years are not recorded.
